Sustainability - MyLocalDost

Rewind the Planet. Come Back to You.

We are building India's most sustainable travel brand. Not by switching to paper straws. We are building something that brings back cleaner air, deeper sleep, and food that actually heals you.

What We Mean Not sustainability as a claim. Sustainability as a felt return to cleaner, slower, quieter living.
Built Around Air, water, fire, earth, people, and soul.

Six reasons every MLD stay changes how you feel.

This section comes straight from the original sustainability narrative: six pillars that explain how an MLD stay changes air, water, food, community, and the way your body settles down.

4.1

Air

AQI below 20 · PM2.5 below 20

Tap to explore

"3 days here measurably lowers systemic body inflammation."

Our properties sit where the air is genuinely clean. Renewables and forests keep it that way. Oxygen-dense mountain air clears city smog from your body in days.

One of our homes runs 75% on solar, producing so much clean power it gives electricity back to the grid.
4.4

Water

Spring sourced · Chemical-free

Tap to explore

"Pure spring water naturally softens hair and skin cells."

Harvested from rain, drawn from springs, filtered and tested. Water you can drink without a second thought. No chlorine, no fluoride.

One property has run entirely on harvested rainwater for over 11 years, filtering through natural gravel and UV light.
4.2

Fire

Slow chulha · Farm ingredients

Tap to explore

"Chulha cooking retains 30% more antioxidants than high-heat methods."

Honest kitchens. Food grown on the property, cooked over a chulha, using inherited recipes that have never made it to the internet.

At one home, guests catch river trout from the waters and have it cooked over wood fire within the hour.
4.6

Earth

Carbon-negative · Rewilding canopy

Tap to explore

"Tree phytoncides reduce stress cortisol by 10–15%."

Our homes compost, rewild, and plant native trees. Many sequester more carbon than they produce. The forest is the experience.

One property has a private forest of 12,000 trees that absorbs 690 kg of CO₂ every single night.
4.3

People

100% local staff · Revenue loops

Tap to explore

"Your booking funds local schools and village cooperatives."

100% local staff. Revenue shared with villages. Your booking supports a family, a craft, a community that has lived on this land for generations.

One of our homes is a women-led cooperative where every rupee circulates back to the village.
4.5

Soul

Native Experiences · Live like you belong

Tap to explore

"Zero light pollution boosts melatonin by up to 150%."

Native experiences, guided bird-watching, storytelling by fire. You sleep deeper than you have in months. The thing that changes you.

Live like you belong through local rhythms, stories, trails, food, and everyday ways of being.
The World We Lost

Remember?

"Remember when you could cup your hands under a mountain stream and just drink?"

Remember when food tasted like the earth it came from? When sleeping meant actually sleeping — no screen glow, no notification buzz, just crickets and cool air?

Remember when the air did not need an index number to tell you it was clean?

This is sustainability. Not a compliance report. Not a plastic badge. A feeling you forgot you were missing.

The 7 Parameters

Distilled from the UN SDGs and 7 years of field data across Indian homestays. Seven things one home can actually control.

01 31.1% weight — Most important

Culture, Heritage & Community

Who works here? Who benefits? Is the food from the region? Does the property share its earnings with the village? Sustainability without people is just landscaping.

02 24.4% weight

Energy & Emissions

Solar panels, efficient appliances, smart energy tracking. How much energy a property uses and how hard it tries not to.

03 14.4% weight

Access, Mobility & Local Economy

Does the property support the nearest market, the closest artisan, the village clinic? A sustainable property strengthens the world around it.

04 10.0% weight

Food, Fuel & Water

Rainwater harvesting. Greywater recycling. Clean cooking fuel. The basic resources most hotels still get wrong.

05 10.0% weight

Waste & Circularity

Segregation at source. On-site composting. Zero single-use plastic. A place that does not generate waste it cannot handle.

06 10.0% weight

Landscape & Biodiversity

Native trees. Wildlife corridors. Active rewilding. Building around nature instead of flattening it to build lawns.

07 Qualitative — Unscored

Highlights & Stories

The things no checklist covers. A women-led cooperative. A saved forest patch. A grain that was going extinct until one kitchen brought it back. The human stories that make a property irreplaceable.

Scoring Methodology

30

Indicators

Across 7 weighted parameters. Each indicator is precisely defined and field-verified.

90

Max raw score

Compiled across all parameters. Algorithmically mapped to a 5.0 element rating.

3.5

Minimum onboarding

Properties must score at least 3.5/5.0 on our assessment matrix to be listed. This filters out superficial eco-resorts.

The Algorithm

element_rating = (raw_score / max_score) × 5.0

eco_rating = mean(air, water, fire, earth, people)

The 30 indicators compile a cumulative raw score out of 90. This is algorithmically mapped to our primary framework to yield distinct ratings out of 5.0 for each element. The final Eco Rating is the mathematical mean of these scores.

Exceptions exist — we make relaxations for properties with extraordinary local heart. If a host has restored an ancient native grain or run a 100% waste-free circular kitchen, we honor their dedication and share their unique stories.

CO₂ Impact Calculation

For every booking, our model calculates emissions avoided through renewable practices and waste diversion, balanced against actual fuel burned and carbon absorbed by protected land.

Electricity

CO₂ avoided by off-grid solar and high-efficiency appliances.

Water Systems

Credit from zero-energy spring draws and rainwater loops.

Waste Circularity

CO₂ avoided by source composting and recycling diversion.

Cooking Fuel

Actual CO₂ generated by kitchen fuel — LPG or biomass.

Case Study: 1 Night · 2 Guests — Heal Farm, Sattal

Electricity CO₂ Avoided

1Baseline: 4.0 kWh × 2 guests × 1 night = 8.0 kWh grid energy
2Efficiency savings (20%): 1.6 kWh saved
3Renewable solar offset (50% RE): 1.6 kWh clean energy
4Total avoided: 0.73 × (1.6 + 1.6) = 2.34 kg CO₂e

Waste CO₂ Avoided

1Landfill diversion: 1.5 × 2.0 kg = 3.0 kg CO₂e
2Recycled metals & paper: 0.6 kg CO₂e
3Composting carbon return: 0.1 kg CO₂e
4Total avoided by trash systems: 3.70 kg CO₂e

Tree Sequestration

112,000 trees × 21 kg CO₂/year = 252,000 kg/year
2Per night: 252,000 / 365 = 690.4 kg CO₂e
3Per guest-night: 345.2 kg CO₂e sequestered
6.04 kg Avoided Operational CO₂e
per guest-night
690.4 kg Tree Sequestration
absorbed per night
345.2 kg Per Guest-Night Capture

0.5 kg Cooking CO₂e Emitted
per guest-night

Audit Safeguards

01

Caps on Efficiency Claims

Energy efficiency strictly capped at 70%, water conservation at 80%. Guards against unrealistic projections.

02

RE Additionality at 50%

Only half of renewable energy consumption is credited, accounting for regional power structures.

03

Cooking is a Direct Deduction

Kitchen combustion treated as a carbon deduction, not an offset. Honesty over optics.

04

Forest Sequestration Reported Separately

Tree absorption (345 kg) is catalogued as a distinct land-based metric, separate from operational numbers (6 kg).

What if you and I could
rewind the planet?

Not by protests. Not by guilt. Not by printing paper trees.

Just by choosing where we sleep. Every booking on MyLocalDost supports a home that harvests its own rain, feeds its village, plants its own trees, and refuses to let its culture disappear.

The stars have not gone anywhere. The streams still run clean in places most people have never heard of.

You do not leave it behind. You take it with you. The rhythm of sleeping early, the taste of real food, the habit of breathing deeply. It starts at an MLD property. It follows you home.
